Best Farmers Markets on the Westside

Three Farmers Markets to Explore on LA’s Westside

One of the first things I tell people who are new to a neighborhood is to go find the farmers market. It tells you more about a place than any listing ever could.
There is a rhythm to a good neighborhood, and the farmers market is where you can hear it. It is the one day each week when a street fills up with people who actually live there. You see the regulars.
You see what is in season. You get a read on the neighborhood that a quick drive-through never gives you.
I have spent years showing homes across the Westside, and I still tell buyers the same thing.
Before you decide on a neighborhood, go to its market on a Saturday or a Sunday. Walk the length of it. That visit will teach you something the photos cannot.
So here are the markets I send people to, and what makes each one worth the trip.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • A farmers market is one of the fastest ways to feel the real character of a neighborhood.
  • Each of these three Westside markets has its own personality.
  • Go early for the best selection, and take your time once you arrive.
  • If you are house hunting, time a showing around the local market and stay through the visit.

1. The Ones I Send People To

Every one of these has a different character. Some are big and lively. Some are small and neighborly.
The right one for you depends on the pace you like.

Santa Monica Farmers Markets

Wednesday and Saturday, 8 a.m.–1 p.m.
Arizona Avenue near Second Street

The one a lot of people think of first, and for good reason. The Wednesday market is known for its range and its serious produce selection.

The Saturday markets are more of a weekend outing. If you want the full Westside market experience, start here.

Culver City Farmers Market

Tuesday, 2–7 p.m. · Main Street.
Downtown Culver City

This one changes Downtown Culver City for a few hours.

It runs year round, and because it is an afternoon market, it fits neatly into the end of a workday.

A good option if your weekend is already spoken for.

Mar Vista Farmers Market

Sunday, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.
Grand View Boulevard at Venice Boulevard

A neighborhood favorite, and a place where you run into people you know.

It is a good Sunday stop, and it captures the unhurried character that draws people to this part of the Westside.

You cannot really know a neighborhood until you have stood in the middle of it on market day.

2. How I Actually Work a Market

After enough visits, you pick up a few habits. Here is how I move through one.
  • Go early. The best produce and the calmest crowds are both in the first hour.
  • Walk the whole thing first. Do one loop before you buy anything. You will spot the stalls worth going back to.
  • Talk to the growers. They will tell you what is best that week, and it is usually not what you came in for.
  • Bring your own bag and small bills. It makes the stop easier.
Let it be slow. The point is not efficiency. The point is the morning.
The growers are the best guide to what is worth buying that week. Ask them.

3. Why This Matters When You Are Buying

Here is the part that ties back to what I do.
When a client is deciding between neighborhoods, I often suggest we meet at the local market before we ever look at a house. You learn the walkability. You see who lives there. You see the block when it is at its most social.
A listing shows you a house. A market morning shows you the life around it. And the life
around it is a big part of what you are actually buying.

A Westside Sunday I Love

One of my favorite things is a Sunday that starts at a market and ends with a coffee and no particular plan. You walk, you pick up something for dinner, you talk to a grower about tomatoes for longer than you meant to.
That is the Westside at its best. Unhurried, local, and easy to love.
So here is my challenge for you this weekend. Pick one market you have never been to. Go early. Walk it slowly. And if you fall a little in love with the neighborhood around it, you know who to call.
